The Science & Strategy of Eyewitness Interviewing & Testimony
Cognitive neuroscientist Kendall Braun and Assistant Federal Defender Loren Stewart will be joining us to talk about the science and strategy of eyewitness interviewing and testimony. Eyewitness testimony is often assumed to be more reliable than memory research suggests. In this training, we will explore how the brain encodes, consolidates, and recalls memories, highlighting how each stage is influenced by external factors. We will examine the roles of attention, pre- and post-encoding information, and stress in shaping memory accuracy. By understanding the mechanisms underlying memory errors, Public Defenders can more effectively challenge the reliability of eyewitness testimony.
