Foundations of Mitigation Investigation is a newly launched online training library made available through the National Association for Public Defense (NAPD)’s TalentLMS program. This free training follows an on-demand format that enables participants to progress at their own pace as they learn best practices for mitigation through all stages and types of public defense practice. Any Public Defender – including social service advocates, mitigation specialists, investigators, attorneys, paralegals, and support staff – can benefit from this course.
The course will give its users the mitigation investigation tools to present their client’s humanity to decision makers and zealously advocate for them both inside and outside the courtroom. Through video presentations, lectures and assignments, participants will learn about the purpose of mitigation investigation along with the basics of rapport building, interviewing, record collection and review. They will also practice drafting a mitigation report outline or investigation plan, tools to help them organize how they tell their client’s story.
